John T. Gillespie, PAPERBACK BOOKS FOR YOUNG PEOPLE: AN ANNOTATED GUIDE TO PUBLISHERS AND DISTRIBUTORS 26-27 (1977):
Crowell markets separate paperback imprints: Apollo Editions, Funk & Wagnalls, Minerva Press, Thomas Y. Crowell, John Day, and Abelard-Schuman Books. Of these, only two have series for young people: Apollo Junior Books and Crowell Crocodiles. Both are discussed below.
The largest of the adult trade lines is Apollo Editions with approximately 100 titles in print. The areas of concentration are sociology, archaeology, history, and self-help. Most of the titles are too scholarly for wide purchase in school libraries; however, there are a few notable exceptions, particularly in the field of Black studies where, for example, you will find Milton Meltzer’s 3-volume In Their Own Words, a history of the Blacks in America.
